Dark Roast (12)

Roasted long, until roast character overtakes origin character: chocolate, toast, low acidity and a heavy body that stays present under a lot of milk. This is the traditional Italian espresso profile and the right choice if you drink large milk coffees or you find lighter roasts thin or sour. It is also the most forgiving band to pull espresso with, because the roast sweetness covers small errors in dose and grind.

Dark roast coffee beans for milk coffee

Dark and medium-dark roasts are the classic espresso profile: chocolate, toast and a heavy body that stays present under a lot of milk. The strongest in the range is Di Stefano 1820; Caffe Moda Venetian is syrupy with dark chocolate; the Coffee Specialists blends are built for cappuccinos and lattes.

Is dark roast stronger?

It tastes stronger, but it does not carry more caffeine. Per bean, caffeine barely changes with roast. What changes is flavour: more bitterness and body, less acidity. If you want more caffeine, use a larger dose, not a darker roast.

Which grind for a dark roast?

Dark roasts extract easily, so they are forgiving on a home espresso machine. Use the grind for your brewer; the grind size chart has the details.
