A coffee subscription sends fresh beans to your door on a schedule, so you never run out and never end up with a half-stale bag from the supermarket. Whether it is worth it depends on how much coffee you drink and how much you care about freshness.
What you are actually paying for
- Freshness. A good subscription ships coffee soon after roasting, which is the single biggest factor in how it tastes.
- Not running out. The coffee arrives before you need it.
- Variety, if you want it. Some subscriptions rotate coffees, which is a good way to learn what you like.
How much coffee do you really need?
This is where most people get a subscription wrong. Work it out from your dose:
- A double espresso uses roughly 14 to 20g of coffee, so 1kg makes about 50 to 70 doubles.
- A 250ml filter or plunger coffee uses about 15g, so 1kg makes around 65 cups.
Two milk coffees a day is roughly 1kg a month. Order more than you can finish in a month and the end of every bag will be stale.
What to check before you sign up
- Whether you can choose the grind to match your brew method, or get whole beans.
- How often it ships, and whether you can pause or skip.
- What shipping costs. Coffee ships for $11.95, and free once your coffee comes to $99.
- Whether you choose the coffees, or the roaster does.
Subscription or buying as you go
If you drink the same coffee every day and always reorder at the same time, a subscription saves effort. If your consumption varies, buying 1kg bags as you need them is just as fresh and more flexible.
A prepaid year of coffee
Our One Year Coffee Subscription is twelve kilograms of coffee, one kilogram delivered each month for a year, paid for once. There is nothing for the recipient to set up, cancel or forget, which is why it is mostly bought as a gift.
If you would rather try before committing, the coffee sampler gives you four different 250g bags first.
Common questions
How many coffees do you get from 1kg of beans?
About 50 to 70 double shots, or around 65 cups of filter or plunger coffee, depending on your dose.
Is a coffee subscription cheaper than buying beans?
Not always. The value is freshness and convenience. Compare the price per kilogram, including shipping, with buying the same coffee in 1kg bags.
Is a coffee subscription a good gift?
Yes, especially prepaid, because the recipient gets coffee every month without having to set anything up.
