Description

Fruity acidity with a caramel and chocolate finish.

Coffee Specialists Gourmet is a medium roast specialty blend with lively fruity acidity that settles into caramel and chocolate. It is balanced enough for a long black and sweet enough for cappuccinos, flat whites and lattes.

Available in 500g or 1kg, whole bean or ground to your brew method on the day we ship.

Gourmet is the lightest roast in the Coffee Specialists range and the one to choose if you drink some coffees black. The fruity acidity shows in a long black, and the caramel and chocolate carry it when you add milk, so one bag covers a household that drinks both.

How to brew it

  • Espresso machine: fine. Start with 18 to 20g in a double basket and aim for about 25 to 30 seconds; go finer if it runs fast, coarser if it chokes.
  • Stovetop / moka pot: fine to medium-fine, a little coarser than espresso. Fill the basket level and do not tamp.
  • Plunger (French press): coarse. Roughly 60g per litre, steep four minutes, then press slowly.
  • Filter and pour over: medium. Around 60g per litre of water is a good starting ratio.
  • AeroPress: medium-fine, with one to two minutes of contact time.

Blend or single origin?

A blend mixes beans from more than one farm or country, balanced by the roaster so the cup tastes the same bag after bag. A single origin comes from one place, so it tastes distinctly of where it grew and shifts a little with each harvest.

Which grind should I pick?

Whole Beans
Unground, exactly as roasted. Pick this if you have a grinder at home. It keeps its flavour far longer than ground coffee and will always give you the better cup.Shop grinders →
Ground: Espresso – Commercial
Fine, set for a cafe machine with a 9 bar pump and a 58mm portafilter. Too fine for most home machines, which will choke on it.Shop commercial machines →
Ground: Espresso – Home
Fine, but a touch coarser than the commercial setting, so a domestic espresso machine can push water through it without stalling.Shop home espresso machines →
Ground: Aeropress
Medium-fine, between espresso and filter. Suits the short steep an Aeropress uses.Shop brewing gear →
Ground: Stovetop
Medium-fine for a moka pot or percolator. Finer than filter, coarser than espresso, so it does not clog the basket.Shop moka pots →
Ground: Filter
Medium, for drip machines and pour over. The most forgiving grind if you are not sure which to choose.Shop pour over →
Ground: Plunger
Coarse, for a French press. Fine grounds slip past the mesh and end up as silt in the bottom of your cup.Shop plungers →
Ground: Cold Drip
Coarse, for cold drip and cold brew. A long steep in cold water needs a coarse grind or it turns bitter and muddy.Shop cold brew →

Ground fresh on the day we dispatch, not pulled off a shelf. If you are between two, whole bean keeps best.

Common questions

Which grind should I choose?

Pick the brew method you actually use and we grind to match it: espresso, filter, plunger, stovetop or Turkish. Choose whole bean if you have a grinder at home, which will always give you the better cup.

How fresh are these beans?

We grind and dispatch on the same day rather than pulling a pre-ground bag off a shelf, so the coffee is as close to roast-fresh as mail order gets.

How long do they keep once opened?

Keep the bag sealed and out of the light and it will hold up for roughly two to four weeks after opening. Whole beans hold longer than ground. Do not refrigerate it.

Can I get this on subscription?

Yes. We run a prepaid twelve month coffee subscription: pay once, choose four coffees and how often you want them, and a kilo arrives on schedule for a year.
